Distance Learning

Presented by Rolls RoyceDistance learning08

Zoos have the power to carry us from the frozen fields of Antarctica to the deepest jungles of South America. With a Distance Learning program, your class can reach across the miles for an amazing learning experience. The Indianapolis Zoo invites you to connect with that power right in your own classroom.

An Interactive Experience Beyond the Exhibits

As one of the first zoos in the country to offer two-way interactive video adventures, the Indianapolis Zoo connects with students across Indiana, throughout the United States, and beyond - including Mexico and Saudi Arabia. Students learn about the Earth, the environment, and the wonderful range of creatures that share it during each of these video adventures.  We expand their classroom walls beyond their community.

Wired For Education

Since 1994, the Indianapolis Zoo has the ability to connect with classrooms from different sites all around the Zoo and White River Gardens. Our Distance Learning Mobile Unit goes almost everywhere, from our Zoo studio to the Deserts biome and into a conservatory where butterflies fly lazily through the air. Distance Learning brings your students into our natural world without them ever leaving their seats.

What Should I Expect During a Connection With the Zoo?

Kudu-Gabi MooreA member of the Zoo’s education staff teaches every Distance Learning program. Programs can occur in front of animal exhibits, but we also schedule broadcasts from the Gardens or in our green-screen equipped studio. Your students will be able to see animals in natural environments, and can ask questions about what they’re seeing. Every Distance Learning session may also feature a variety of video footage, artifacts, slide shows, and activities to give students one of the most interactive programs available.  Photo by Gabi Moore

Grade Levels and Academic Standards

All programs, unless otherwise noted, are suitable for K-8th grade students and are aligned with the Indiana Academic Standards. For the standards addressed in a specific program, contact Allison Young.
